For the neck, the bag, the hair.

THE COLLECTION
Painted first. Then silk. For people who dress the way they live: with care.
Each scarf begins as a painting. Weeping cherries and blossom-laden branches — violet on black, blush on moss, pink on lapis and beni — are reproduced from the studio’s master scans of the original paintings, so the brushwork, the gold signature and the red seal arrive on the silk as they are on the canvas.
The result is an artist silk scarf rather than a pattern: a Japanese silk scarf in the tradition of the painted carré, with a plain border drawn from the colours of the painting itself. Wear it as a floral silk scarf at the neck, a square silk scarf over the shoulders, or tie the long scarf and let the branch run its length.
Every size is cut from the same painting at the same print scale. The 90 shows the widest window, the 70 a closer branch, the long scarf the cascade — one tree, three scarves. Which is why two coordinated silk scarves from the same painting — a 90 and a 70, say — make such a natural silk scarf gift set.
“Unlike gold and diamonds, art has this other value, and that’s what makes it fascinating. Everything else is trying to sell you something else. Art is trying to sell you yourself. That’s what is different about it. Art is what makes life worth living.”Keith Tyson, artist — quoted in Sarah Thornton, Seven Days in the Art World (2008)

Wearable art printed from the studio’s master scans of five original cherry-blossom paintings by Sou A Kou — the painter’s signature and seal are part of the print on the 90 cm square. Made by a specialist silk manufacturer also used by Liberty; Keigen is an independent brand and is not affiliated with Liberty. These are decorative editions, not the original paintings or the hand-signed limited prints, which are published separately. The collection is produced in small runs.
Sizes are finished scarf sizes, width × height. The 70 × 70 cm square is 14 momme silk twill and the 90 × 90 cm square 14–16 momme silk twill; the 175 × 50 cm long scarf is 16 momme crêpe de chine; Beni Blossom is also offered in a 90 cm 16 momme silk satin edition. Each size carries a plain border (5.5 cm on the 90, 4.5 cm on the 70, 3.5 cm on the long scarf) with a pale inner line. The 70 and the long scarf show a different window of the same painting at the same print scale as the 90.
Dry clean, or hand wash in cool water with a silk detergent; do not wring. Lay flat or hang to dry away from direct sunlight; cool iron on the reverse while slightly damp. Keep away from perfume, sprays and rough jewellery.

THE PAINTINGS
The five paintings behind this collection are by Sou A Kou (曹亜鋼), where the Chinese ink tradition meets the colour and materials of Japanese painting. The cherry-blossom series was shown in a solo exhibition at the Ueno Royal Museum, Tokyo, in 2011.
The scarves are printed from the weeping cherries of 枝垂れ桜, the night cascade of 桜流し and the 桜色 series. Every scarf is reproduced from the studio’s master scan of the original painting, signature and seal included, which is what makes these designer silk scarves wearable art rather than a pattern.

From silk back to the wall — the same paintings are also available as framed prints and canvas on rails.
A FEW DETAILS
The 70 × 70 cm square is the neckerchief and bag-tie size. The 90 × 90 cm carré is the classic square silk scarf — fold it on the bias for the neck, or drape it over the shoulders. The 175 × 50 cm long scarf loops twice at the neck or hangs open over a coat. Each size shows a different window of the same painting at the same print scale.
The square scarves are silk twill (14 momme for the 70, 14–16 momme for the 90), the weave used for the classic painted carré: crisp, with a soft diagonal sheen, it holds a knot and shows the brushwork sharply. The long scarf is 16 momme crêpe de chine, a lighter matte silk that drapes at the neck. Beni Blossom is also offered in a 90 cm 16 momme silk satin edition for a high-shine finish.
Yes. Each scarf is reproduced from the studio’s master scan of the original painting. The painter’s gold signature and red seal are part of the print on the 90 cm square, and the plain border colour is taken from the painting itself. The original paintings are held by the artist’s studio in Japan; the hand-signed limited prints are published separately.
It is the same painting, not the same crop. The 90 shows the widest window; the 70 a 60 cm window of the same painting at the same print scale — a closer branch; the long scarf a 167 cm strip that follows the cascade of blossom. One tree, three scarves.
Yes. Choose two sizes in the same colourway — a 90 and a 70, say — for a mother and daughter, sisters, friends or two generations of one family. They are cut from the same painting, so the branches match. A pair option with pair pricing arrives with the first edition; the Seasonal Letter below will tell you first.
Each scarf is finished with a rolled hem, with the silk’s paler reverse just visible along the edge, and a plain border with a pale inner line printed to the colour of its painting.
Dry clean, or hand wash in cool water with a silk detergent and do not wring. Lay flat or hang to dry away from direct sunlight, and cool-iron on the reverse while slightly damp. Keep silk away from perfume, hairspray and rough jewellery.
